The Swedish municipality of Sundsvall published an international competition for their new theatre on the banks of the river. The design proposal is a lightweight and energetic sculpture. All elements of the program, like the theatre and dance halls, offices and lobbies are recognisable in the overall composition. The volumes have a slick white metal finishing lending the building a machinelike aesthetics, as the local ‘generator’ of culture and inspiration. The building shapes the direct surroundings into a city square in front of the Kulturmagasinet and the wide open space along the river, well suited for cultural festivals.
