As a kick off for the redevelopment of the former Shell area in the north of Amsterdam ING published a competition for a central plot behind the well-known Shell tower. The program included office spaces, a hotel and the entertainment centre Skytower. The centre in the top of the tower should offer grand views of the city centre and attract the many tourists that visit Amsterdam. The design proposal takes up three orientations that are relevant, the view to the centre in the top, views to the old Dutch landscapes to the north of Amsterdam and the grid of the urban design. The result is a dynamic and twisting design. A delicate balance of shifting and turning volumes. An attraction in itself.
